What is blood pressure and how is it measured

What is Blood Pressure?

Blood Pressure is the amount of force utilized by blood while travelling to all parts of the body. The normal range of blood pressure differs from age to age.

Two types of blood pressure occur in the human body. They are:

  1. Systolic Blood Pressure: Systolic blood pressure is the higher value of blood pressure. Systolic BP is the force the heart uses while pushing blood to the artery wall. The systolic blood pressure is the pressure counted when the heart beats.

  2. Diastolic Blood Pressure: Diastolic Blood pressure is the lower value of blood pressure. Diastolic BP is the force utilized by blood to fill the arteries. Diastolic BP is the pressure counted when the heart rests between two beats.

Why should blood pressure be monitored?

Measuring blood pressure is the only way to diagnose a person suffering from high or low blood pressure.

Hypertension (high BP) is life-threatening if untreated, and Hypotension (low BP), if not managed, can affect your health in various ways.

It is essential to measure your BP at regular intervals as High Blood Pressure will not give you any signs or symptoms of warning. Increased blood pressure can get you at risk of many severe conditions like stroke and heart attack and can be highly problematic during pregnancy and post-pregnancy. So, it is essential to measure blood pressure.

How is the blood pressure monitored?

Blood pressure can be monitored at home using BP machines. The machine is called a sphygmomanometer.

  • Manual BP Monitoring Machine:

Manual The manual BP machine is used by doctors at hospital-grade check-ups, and it is usually difficult for a person to fetch the readings without doctors’ assistance. The reading is taken by looking at the mercury level, and an average person without medical knowledge finds it challenging to record the accurate reading from the traditional BP machine.

  • Digital BP Monitoring Machine:

Digital BP monitoring systems have made it easy for anyone to measure their blood pressure at home. Unlike Manual/traditional BP monitoring machines, Digital monitoring machines are easy-to-use, automatic and give you a hassle-free experience in tracking your BP levels.

Digital blood pressure monitoring machines measure your BP and pulse rate and can be used anytime, anywhere.

How does the blood pressure monitor work?

The blood pressure monitors work with a button. The arm cuff will be provided, and a monitor will display your blood pressure readings.

  • Once the arm cuff is placed tightly on the arms, the person has to switch on the button given on the monitor.

  • The arm cuff starts to inflate when the measurement starts. The arm cuff automatically deflates once the device records the measurement.

The benefits of Digital Blood Pressure Monitors

Easy to use – The digitally programmed blood pressure monitor machines are easy to use since the pressure inflated and deflated will be automatic through a button.

Reliable: Since most of us live with a busy routine, it might be challenging to visit a doctor’s shop or depend on the caretaker to monitor your blood pressure. But a digital BP monitor is a reliable device that lets you keep track of your BP levels at home.

Travel-friendly: Blood pressure monitors are easy to use and easy to carry. You do not have to worry about leaving the town and finding a new medic in a new place to measure your blood pressure. Digital blood pressure monitors are highly portable.

Conclusion:

Compared to traditional/manual blood pressure monitors, digital blood pressure monitors are budget-friendly are effective in monitoring BP levels in out-of-the-hospital circumstances.
